MLB Hall Of Fame

Tuesday, February 28th, 2006

Major League Baseball elected 17 people from the Negro Leagues and pre-Negro Leagues to the Hall of Fame yesterday including Effa Manly, co-owner of the Newark Eagles and the first woman to ever be elected to the Hall.

But the biggest thing about this election may be who was not chosen and his response:

Seventeen people from the Negro Leagues and pre-Negro Leagues eras were voted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, but not Buck O’Neil.

“God’s been good to me,” the 94-year-old said after results of Monday’s special election were announced. “You can see that, can’t you? It didn’t happen. They didn’t think Buck was good enough to be in the Hall of Fame. That’s the way they thought about it and that’s the way it is, so we’re going to live with that. Now, if I’m a hall-of-famer for you, that’s all right with me. Just keep loving old Buck.

“Don’t shed any tears ’cause I’m not going to the Hall of Fame.”

“You think about this,” he said. “Here I am, the grandson of a slave. And here the whole world was excited about whether I was going into the Hall of Fame or not. We’ve come a long ways. Before, we never even thought about anything like that. America, you’ve really grown and you’re still growing.”

He’s sure as hell a Hall Of Famer for me.

This is interesting.

You’re assigned a side and then where you want to move is taken into consideration with where everyone else on your side wants to move and the paddle moves. There’s gotta be a psychological study associated with this…

…for cute musical girls.

Tessie Brunet, the drumming and background vocal half of deadboy & the elephantmen, is quite cute, IMO.

And so is Annie Hardy, the guitarist and lead vocal half of Giant Drag.

What if the two were to form a band together? Could the world handle such sweetness?

Or, better put in a modern fad vernacular:

Oh yeah, and both bands are pretty good too. Check them out.

This sidetrack was brought to you by the letter “9″ and the number “Pi”.

One Million Dollars For World Peace

Monday, February 27th, 2006

If only for a moment. Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban commenting on Donald Trump’s upcoming appearance on the Howie Mandel Show:

Howie, if you can get Mr Trump to pull a rubber glove completely over his head and blow it up on your show, not only will I watch it, I will donate 1 million dollars to the charity of your choice.

What could be better than that? Money for a great cause that you love. For the Donald, the thing he loves more than anything, bragging rights. Is there any doubt that by Tuesday afternoon he would be able to say that he was responsible for the most watched television show in the history of TV?

Is it possible that any human being on the planet would be able to resist watching Donald Trump blow up a rubber glove over his head? I dont think so. Combatants around the world would lay down their arms and all enjoy a moment of shared laughter.

I dont have the power to cause the end to wars. If only for a moment. You do Donald.

A small price to pay. If only for a moment.

Wow!

WVCW - VCU’s Independent Student Radio Station

Hmmm…. I’m trying to think of something smart and funny to say and all that comes to mind is that my wallet is brown. Which isn’t very amusing or insightful. So I’ll avoid the witty banter this evening and just let you know that you can now subscribe to the podcast of not only Under The Covers but ALL of WVCW’s great shows (great because not only is it your music but it is also your station) through the WVCW Blog! How cool is that!

My stint in male modeling and the finding of the site Music For Kids Who Can’t Read Good (and who want to learn to do other stuff good too) reminded me that I really needed to get a copy of “Zoolander”. So I did. Fantastic movie, I’ll probably pop it in tonight.

Last night I stayed up late watching the original “Manchurian Candidate”. Fantastic movie that I honestly had never seen before. Such a sheltered life I’ve lived. Man, was I missing out. Wonderfully paced, well acted, damn good stuff. Haven’t seen the remake and really don’t want to. This is good enough.

I grabbed “Coffee And Cigarettes” because it was on sale and I wanted to see it when it was out in the theaters and missed it. It’s supposed to be good, I guess I’ll find out for myself soon enough.

“Fargo” and “Hudsucker Proxy” put me one movie away from completing the Coen Brothers collection. If Tower Records had “The Ladykillers” in stock I’d probably be done by now. That’ll have to wait for another day, I suppose.

The first two discs are the fault of Mocking Music. Nick Drake’s a new one to me. At least by name. I’ve heard some of his songs in the past but for some reason they never clicked. Now, though, wow. “Pink Moon” is a nice, light album that is great background noise for just lounging around. The same for Castanets’ “Cathedreal”, I’d have to agree with Mocking Music’s review and say this is probably best for night and winter. It’s not exactly happy music. Not depressing, but it probably wouldn’t fit if you were clicking your heels in joy over something. Check out Mocking Music for a taste of both of these guys.

Hank Williams’s “Alone and Forsaken” is just another fix for my growing Hank Williams appetite. Old school country rocks and what’s more old school country than the senior Williams?

- Mocking Music is a fantastic site with indepth reviews, interviews, and some great music for download.

- Music For Kids Who Can’t Read Good (and who want to learn to do other stuff good too) not only has a great name taken from a great movie but also has a lot of excellent songs from folks big and small. I’m particularly fond of their all covers post. Johnny Cash covering a Beck song? Sweet!

I’ve kinda tweaked my Recordnerd listing a wee bit. Just added my 2005 purchases and have a hell of a lot more before my entire collection is up, but just the same you can get a feel for my musical tastes. I’ll probably toss my 2006 additions to date sometime this weekend. Yea, me.

I am a male model…

Wednesday, February 15th, 2006

Work needed someone to show off the t-shirt and hat combos we sell so they asked me to do it.

What the picture fails to show are my nipples. It was freakin’ cold out when they took this picture last week. Ah, the trials and tribulations of a male model.

I tried to convince them to use the Blue Steel pic but no go. And my latte was foamy. Such a hard job…

Perhaps This Is More Fitting?
