This Weekend’s Under The Covers

Friday, March 31st, 2006

This Sunday at 8pm join me for a very special Under The Covers. Not only will there be a whole hour chock full of cover songs but this weekend will also include a live set by the one and only Kenney Boy and his pal Paul. Yes, that’s right, live, in the studio, strumming on strummers and attempting to sing.

What more could you ask for?

Oh. Cake and punch? Well you’ll have to bring your own.

Read It Before You Buy It: AiT/PlanetLar’s Continuity

That link has not only a letter from publisher Larry Young but also a link to the comic. Smart idea, I say. If it doesn’t boost sales for the book itself I think it’ll help the rest of AiT/PlanetLar’s line. It certainly won’t hurt the sales, I’m sure anyone who wants to buy the graphic novel will just the same. Good call.

Shrimp FINALLY To Get Some Action

Wednesday, March 29th, 2006

A shrimp-like creature may have to forfeit its claim to be the longest abstainer from sex in the animal world.

The discovery of three living male specimens casts doubt on the idea that the Darwinulidae family has been female and asexual for 200 million years.

Darwinulids produce eggs which do not need to be fertilised by sperm.

But a team of scientists, writing in a Royal Society journal, cannot say yet whether the newly found males actually perform a sexual function.

If they do not, if researchers can show the males are just some evolutionary hangover that is really no longer needed for reproduction - then the creatures will retain their famed celibacy status.

What Can $2 Billion Get You?

Wednesday, March 29th, 2006

Facebook.

The owners of the privately held company have turned down a $750 million offer and hope to fetch as much as $2 billion in a sale, senior industry executives familiar with the matter say.

That may sound like a huge amount of money, especially when you consider that the company was launched just two years ago by a group of sophomores at Harvard University, led by Mark Zuckerberg. But already, www.facebook.com has become the seventh-most heavily trafficked site on the Internet, according to market researcher comScore Media Metrix. It racked up 5.5 billion page views during the month of February, the latest month for which complete data are available. That’s more page views than the Web sites of Amazon.com , Ask.com, or Walt Disney.

But when you consider MySpace sold for only $580 million (chump change) and it’s the second-most visited site on the web, $2 billion might be a bit much. Me? I’d have sold at $750 million, but what do I know, I don’t own the seventh-most visited site on the web.

Del. Harry Parrish Dies At 84

Tuesday, March 28th, 2006

Harry J. Parrish, who defied death as a decorated World War II pilot and headed the state’s most powerful tax-writing panel in the General Assembly, died Tuesday. He was 84.

Parrish had been in intensive care at Prince William Hospital for about three weeks, suffering from pneumonia. His death was announced by Sen. John Chichester during a meeting of the Senate Finance Committee on Capitol Square.

Parrish had been in declining health for at least two years but continued a full legislative schedule, including acting as chairman of the House Finance Committee, one of the most powerful leadership positions in the General Assembly.

Last year, Parrish warded off a Republican primary challenge for his House seat _ payback from his party’s own conservative wing for defying its anti-tax orthodoxy during the 2004 tax battle.

Parrish, the House of Delegates’ oldest member, was in his 13th term from Manassas.

American’s Don’t Trust Athiests

Tuesday, March 28th, 2006

Survey: U.S. trust lowest for atheists

Based on a telephone survey of more than 2,000 households and in-depth interviews with more than 140 people, researchers found that Americans rate atheists below Muslims, recent immigrants, homosexuals and other groups as “sharing their vision of American society.” Americans are also least willing to let their children marry atheists.

Edgell said Americans traditionally have been a religious people and associate faith with being a good citizen. The survey results indicate that this belief hasn’t changed, Edgell said.

Those surveyed tended to view people who don’t believe in a god as the “ultimate self-interested actor who doesn’t care about anyone but themselves,” Edgell said.

Is Anyone Really Surprised?

Tuesday, March 28th, 2006

Via Not Larry Sabato, Rasmussen has a new poll out that shows Senator George Allen with a commanding lead over the potential Democratic challengers:

In his bid for re-election, Virginia Senator George Allen (R) now leads businessman Harris Miller (D) by 29 percentage points, 56% to 27%. The latest Rasmussen Reports election poll in the race also shows Allen leading former Navy secretary James Webb by 24 percentage points, 54% to 30%.
* Emphasis mine.

Sure it’s early, sure name recognition’s a part in this, but even if all of the undecideds went for the Democratic nominees Allen would still win. And, I’m sorry, but hammering on Allen’s potential Presidential bid won’t work here. I think the prospect of Allen’s run will get more folks to vote for him than against him.

Better Late Than Never: Ramsey To The Jets

Tuesday, March 28th, 2006

Patrick Ramsey was acquired by the New York Jets March 17th. He’ll have a good shot at starting too. I’ve always thought Ramsey had a good chance in the right system. Namely one that would let him spend more time on his feet than his duff, which Spurrier’s didn’t exactly achieve. Ramsey came out of that a little too shook up and Gibbs went with Brunell who has done some good stuff. Now Ramsey will get a shot with a team that can really use a guy with an arm like his. Here’s hoping it works out for him.
