Why John McCain And Why Now?

Chris Green (aka STD) wondered why I support John McCain and why I chose now to express it. It’s a good question and one I answered back in the comments, but I figure I should share it here as well for anyone else who might find themselves scratching their heads:
I had avoided making a full endorsement of anyone because not only was the field too large but my time to actually look into the candidates was limited. Initially I was a Thompson guy, but he looked better when thinking about running than he did once he was in. I have for months considered McCain the candidate to watch. Despite the troubles in his campaign he still held steady in numbers and kept his name around.
Looking at the field, what do you have? Huckabee’s more or less Jimmy Carter, only with less foreign policy experience. Ron Paul is utterly unelectable and out of left field. Romney’s ability to mold his politics to public opinion is amazing.
Immigration is a non-issue for me. Seriously, I don’t care, and I’ll articulate why in the near future. McCain/Feingold was a band-aid to a broken system to which any solution was not going to be taken well. And I don’t see McCain about to push for any restrictions on the Second Amendment, [NRA] C+ rating or no.
John McCain’s foreign policy experience and stand in the War on Terror is stronger than anyone else in the field. His support for making Bush’s tax cuts permanent goes a long way to putting him in solid conservative financial footing. His overall experience trumps anyone else in the field and he has what it takes to not only win the party nomination but take the White House in November.

He voted against the tax cuts in 2001 and 2003 to pander to the MSM, that really puts him on a solid footing now doesn’t it? He voted against a Same Sex Marriage Ban in America, while couching it with supporting it in Arizona. What’s good for Arizona isn’t good for America?
What part of illegal is lost on you and McCain? Just paying a fine is OK?Undoubtedly McCain is cooking up a tax refund to pay for it anyhow?
McCain Feingold was his attempt to stifle the NRA from railing him on Second Amendment issues within the last 60 days of a campaign. It is better known as the Incumbent Protection Act.
The Second Amendment protects all the rest, but that I see is negotiable, especially if that candidate seems to be leading in the polls?
John McCain is the most self serving, MSM pandering Liberal in the Republican Party and you want to make him President?
I’d believe ya’ll were more sincere about this if you’d committed to him when he was in trouble in the polls, and you wanted this “Best Candidate” to stay in the race. Good Luck tommorrow in Super Tuesday. Remember the favorites to win the Super Bowl last night got a little shock too.
Many Conservatives feel that same sex legislation should be left up to the states. At what point did “state’s rights” fail to be a Conservative value?
What part of the illegal immigration issue frustrates you the most, Chris? The fact that they’re milking a welfare based government system that Conservatives shouldn’t be for anyway or the fact that it shows how poorly we’re instilling our culture on those that come here, legally or not?

Where’s Huckabee on taxes, Chris? Aside from raising them while governor of Arkansas? Where’s his stand on immigration other than the one he decided to take once running for President?
Oh, and what’s up with Huckabee sucking up to McCain lately? How are you going to treat him should he endorse McCain? Gonna question his sincerity too?

PS - I was rooting for the Giants last night. I’ll be rooting for McCain tomorrow night.

Why is this idea not put forth as a way to solve the immigrant issue? Why doesn’t a conservative just come out and say that if we just cut off the government give-aways, the illegals would reduce in numbers?

If we kill the social safety net (read: HAMMOCK) then the social cost of immigration becomes a non-argument.
Of course, this has been the long-held position of many a Kenney brother, and not the position of many conservatives. In fact, I’d argue that conservatives do argue it our way (kill the safety net) and it’s the seedier and less talked about portions of the GOP that have more on their minds than government.
Like I’ve said, if 20 million Canadians were crossing the border… would some folks even care?
