Questioning The Patriotism of Democrats

Only it’s being done by other Dems (in the comments):

Not Larry Sabato said…
I think any decent and patriotic American will be voting for Webb… starting in 22 hours.

Stomp Allen said…
I cannot imagine anyone would ever confuse decent and patriotic with Miller. That is a serious stretch of non-reality.
May Webb prevail – our country needs him.

And this isn’t the first time the “patriotism” of voters and their choice has been brought up on the Webblogs. Just some of the more recent.

Isn’t this something Dem’s scream bloody murder over when Republican’s supposedly do it?

Seniors Overlooked?

With the Democratic Primary tomorrow, Carnack over at NLS makes a very good point in the comments:

my prediction on senior voting is based on (1) good weather, (2) the issue of Democratic loyalty and (3) purely anecdotal information from asking about a dozen senior strangers in a restaurant over the weekend.

In all of the discussions about unions, minorities and the impact of the blogs, I have rarely seen any mention of the demographic least likely to read blogs but most likely to read their mail, take a phone call and be poll workers and voters in a party primary: seniors.

I am speculating that this factor has not been overlooked by the Miller campaign, and that a targeted effort has been made.

Seniors are the largest dependable voting block in primaries and Carnack’s right, they don’t read the blogs. They’re at home reading newspapers and mailers and answering their phone. So when the Washington Post (with its huge circulation) endorses Miller and Webb only gets out one or two mailers compared to the handful from Miller, well, you gotta wonder how blindsided Webbloggers are going to be tomorrow.

I’m saying Miller 53 – Webb 47.

NLS’s Voter Supression?

Virginia Virtucon’s got this breaking news:

We have received a tip that a complaint has been lodged with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia by a Virginia voter or a group of voters in relation to potential voter suppression under the Voting Rights Act with regard to this coming Tuesday’s Democrat primary for U.S. Senate stemming from this.

Wow. I don’t think it’s valid but… Wow.

I think Waldo summed this situation up best:

When the RNC (or the DNC) engages in voter suppression, that’s news (as evidenced by newspapers writing about that particular incident). When some random guy with no resources issues a vague legal warning, that’s amusing, at best.

FLS on “jewbaiting”

The MSM has picked the charge up:

The flier put out by Jim Webb’s campaign for U.S. Senate described his opponent as a corporate lobbyist who made money by sending American jobs overseas.

But what caught Dan Smolen’s attention was the cartoon that accompanied the text: That of a man with a hook nose and money spilling from his pockets.

It was a caricature of Harris Miller, Webb’s opponent in Tuesday’s Democratic primary who happens to be Jewish.

The image made Smolen, who is Jewish and Stafford County’s Democratic chairman, uncomfortable.

“I don’t think whoever did the cartoon caricature meant this as an ethnic slur,” he said, “but the effect of it was very troubling.”

…

“That doesn’t look so good. There’s no question to me that’s replete with anti-Semitic stereotypes,” said Mark Feldstein, an associate professor of media and public affairs at George Washington University. “I’m not someone who readily cries anti-Semitism, but I think it’s hard to look at this and not see a number of anti-Semitic stereotypes plugged into this ad, from the hook nose to the ‘antichrist’ to the money-grubbing character.”

You can check out the flier here.

They even go so far as to cite two bloggers:

Folks posting messages on not LarrySabato.typepad.com, a politically minded blog where the image can be seen, have argued for days over whether the flier is a bold political move or a bad decision.

Shaun Kenney, chairman of the Spotsylvania Republican Party, accused Webb of “jewbaiting” on his blog, shaunkenney.com.

And the folks saying that it was just a joke? Nope. Seems it was meant for “just one event”:

“I’m completely satisfied with the Webb campaign’s recognition that this in fact, had it gone out, could’ve been a damaging situation and that in the future they’re going to make sure this doesn’t happen again,” Smolen said. “I don’t think it was a deliberate smear.”

Ouch.

What was that Paul Goldman was saying about Webbloggers hurting the campaign?

Flying Paratroopers

Paratroopers could fly 200km with new wings system

A new military parachute system which fits wings on soldiers could enable them to travel to 200 kilometres (124 miles) after jumping, Jane’s Defence Weekly defence magazine said Friday.

The system, which involves the development of new modular carbon-fibre wings, will mean that aircraft can drop parachutists from 30,000 feet (9,150 metres) into an area of operations without flying into a danger zone.

How cool is that?
