Sad Heroes

Top Five Depressed Superheroes

1. Black Bolt. Black Bolt isn’t allowed to speak, because his voice is so horribly destructive that it might demolish the world. His wings resemble accordians, the most harmless and charming of instruments (apart from the kazoo), mocking the cataclymsic potential of his speaking voice. He never learned sign language, and it can be infuriating waiting for him to scribble a note, or while he attempts to indicate his thoughts with a scowl or pout. In restaurants it takes Black Bolt hours to decide on the simplest order. Ostensibly many other superheroes look up to him for leadership, but if you really pay any attention to his band of followers you perceive immediately that they are all freaks, with lousy powers. His dog is ugly.

Jonathan Lethem freakin’ rules. Go buy his new book.

Amazing! How does it know so much?

Downloader “Doe” Fights RIAA

Her lawyer calls her Jane Doe. The music business calls her nycfashiongirl, which is her Kazaa screen name. She’s fighting to keep her real name a secret, becoming the first individual to take a stand against the recording industry’s latest attack on file traders.

In August, Jane Doe filed a legal challenge to block the Recording Industry Association of America from obtaining her identity, because it violates her right to privacy. Since June, the RIAA has run computer searches of hard drives in order to single out at least 1,075 people swapping songs on peer-to-peer services such as Kazaa. The RIAA then subpoenas the person’s Internet service provider to obtain his name and address so that he can potentially be sued for copyright infringement.

WOO HAH! Fight the power! I hope people fight the RIAA tooth and nail.

Wanna know why CD sales are down 31% over the last 10 years? IT’S BECAUSE YOU’RE CHARGING 18 BUCKS A POP FOR THEM! I’m sorry, a CD is not worth an hour of my hard earned pay or three hours of some 16 year old flipping burgers at McD’s.

Are Bloggers the new “Soccer Moms”?

Bush Campaign Reaching Out to Bloggers

President Bush’s campaign will unveil a Web site today that allows proprietors of online journals — Blogs or Web logs — to “get the latest campaign headlines and inside scoop posted instantly to your site through a live news feed from GeorgeWBush.com!”

Bush’s campaign is leaving nothing to chance as his devotees spread his message. The automatic feeds are offered in horizontal and vertical versions.

Clearly cognizant of the Web frenzy over Democrat Howard Dean, Bush’s aides held a conference call to preview the site, which replaces a bare-bones one that has raised $1.3 million from 6,000 donors since the campaign launch May 16.

Campaign manager Ken Mehlman said the site’s purpose is “sharing the president’s positions and tying them to grass-roots activities so that everyone who wants to, has something to do.” The site allows a user to type in a Zip code and find local and national radio talk shows. A letter can be automatically e-mailed to newspapers, and all the supporter has to do is paste in pre-scripted text such as, “President Bush should be commended for his strong leadership on the economy.”

Really, though, most of the sites that will use this feed already post or comment on most of the same stories on their own and link to the Bush in 2004 site.

Car Bomb Explosion Rocks U.N. Headquarters in Iraq

A huge explosion on Tuesday rocked a hotel housing the U.N. headquarters, injuring a number of people and severely damaging the building, a spokesman said.

The force of the blast, which knocked out windows up to a mile away from the scene, destroyed several cars, including one that was on fire.

The U.N. spokesman in Baghdad, Salim Lone, informed U.N. headquarters in New York that a number of people were hurt in the explosion, but no one was killed as far as he knew.

It’s all still developing though. Crap.

Holy riddle, Batman, you?ve just kapowed a man in the street

BATMAN has done a flit from Gotham City. Last night police in Oxford were hunting the Caped Crusader after he knocked a man unconscious in the street.

A police spokeswoman, familiar with the exploits of Gotham City’s Dark Knight, said: “It was really a case of ‘Kapow!'”

The man, in full costume, mask, and cape, was involved in an alleged assault outside a bar in Oxford early on Sunday, Thames Valley Police said.

In a role reversal, the Caped Crusader, who normally will stop at nothing to restore order to the city and protect its citizens, knocked the man to the ground outside the Chicago Rock Cafe in the city centre before running away.
