Got them digits

I think Milli Vanilli said it best when they said, “Baby, don’t you lose my number”… Sniper hooks police up with some digits, Cheif Moose eagerly waiting by phone. Or something like that. It seems the sniper may have left another message. I certainly don’t hope this isn’t just a case of someone losing a number and the police finding it and thinking it’s something it isn’t. I mean, some guy’s probably tearing through his house for some hot chick’s number while the police are waiting by the pay phone the number is too, hoping that it’s a clue. God, I hope they catch this son of a bitch soon.

Is it just me or does this seem, I don’t know, would “trite” be the right word?

It just seems forced. Doonesbury is hopping on the blog bandwagon. Or on the one mocking it. But, ultimately, this strip just doesn’t sit well with me. It’s something I’d expect from another strip like Beetle Baily with that stupid Gizmo character trying to explain to the General how to turn the computer on or something like that. I mean, I think it’s just that I expect more from Doonesbury. Sure, the strip’s all about current events and what not, but maybe it’s the delivery. Maybe it’s the punchline. Who knows. It’s just disappointing.

Oh well.

Maybe Huey will get a blog on Boondocks.

BeltwaySniperForum.com

BeltwaySniperForum.com I’ve realized the problem I’m having with these kind of sites. It’s their forums. Now, the person making these sites might be making them for good intentions, you know, to keep the public informed, as a tribute to the victims, as a support list for those who are stressed out by these events. But sooner or later these sites are over run by people who are just their for a soap box for their theories about who’s responsible and why. Terrorism, government plot, one person, eight people, aliens, these sites will attract these crack pots if they haven’t already so it’s either that these theories are there or they’re coming and I’m very leary of those kinds of things. And I’m sure it’s very frustrating for the webmaster of these sites as well as most of them do not feel the same way as those that will take over their boards. But that is the nature of the beast we all call the Web.

Panic?

And my previous post really leads me into another point I’ve been meaning to make. The “panic” being felt by us here in the Fredericksburg/Washington DC/Southern Maryland area (living in Fredericksburg and commuting to DC, I kinda fall in all sorts of categories). It’s not really so much panic as just caution and anger. Not that I’ve seen. Out of everyone I know only one person is in a panic, and she’s just nuts about these things. She thought she was going to get anthrax right before a car bomb blew up her apartment building.

But people around here aren’t running for the hills or locking themselves in their houses. They can’t, really. This is where we live and work and shop and go about our daily lives. We can’t change that, not too much. There’s only so much you can do. So, sure we move a bit more when we’re filling up our gas tanks and keep an eye over our shoulder when we’re walking to and from stores, but there’s not panic. Most of the panic is outside of the area, people not wanting to come around here for fear of being shot or people just completely flipping out about the whole thing.

Why? Not that you guys don’t have a right and all, but, please, calm down. We’re okay. Sure, we have to be careful, but anyone not being careful in this crazy world really needs a wake up call as it is. Especially in DC where the crime rate is higher than most metro areas and the murder rate borders on the highest.

We’re doing fine, people. Thanks for your concern. Just give your kids extra hugs and kisses and hope this is an isolated incident.

On a lighter note, go check out this Madness.

Too close to home

Meryl Yourish on the recent sniper related shooting. This is interesting to me because she’s currently in Richmond and now she feels at risk. I mean, I’m sure she did before, but this is closer to home for her and probably all of Richmond.

But what I’m really finding interesting is Fredericksburg’s place in Virginia in all of this. I mean, I’ve lived here pretty much all my life and Fredericksburg has always been in some sort of limbo as to where it is. It’s smack dab between Washington DC and Richmond, Virginia. Not quite northern Virginia, not quite central. Not quite a suburb of DC and certainly not a suburb of Richmond.

But Fredericksburg is the line, more or less. Go ten minutes north, you’re in northern Virginia and anything happening there is reflected in DC in some manner. Go ten minutes south, you’re in central Virginia and Richmond is your metro area. Just weird how it reflects in the media and people’s reactions to these events.

I have no idea what I’m trying to say.

Ashland is damn close, though. Not as close as the Exxon around the corner or the Michaels on the other side of town, but still.

Sniper shooting in Ashland?

Sniper shooting in Ashland, VA? All signs point to yes, but they can’t be sure until they get ballistics testing, if they can even get the bullet out of the guy. And I know this area, I go by it a few times a year for various reasons.

Why would the sniper shoot in Ashland?

No one’s looking for him down there.

This would also explain the five day lull, he was casing a new location to do a shooting. He’s unfamiliar with Ashland, or, was and it took time for him to get used to it. Now he’ll move somewhere else or he’ll get gutsy and head back towards the beltway. Sigh.

Also, if you look in TIME magazine this week with their article about the sniper killer they have a map of the area and his shootings. They mixed up the two in the Fredericksburg area, the ones labled 8 and 11. The earlier shooting was further north, the later one was south. Minor thing that should have been caught in editing, but oh well.

I’ve kept from commenting on it for a couple reasons. One, no time. Two, not really hitting home I guess. But now it is. The string of shootings in Montgomery County, Maryland and D.C. and the shooting Friday right down here in Fredericksburg are all related. I don’t know if I’m more relieved it’s all connected or not. It’s good it’s connected in that there aren’t morons running around trying to be copycats (yet). And it’s good she lived down here. Also, the guy’s getting sloppy, which helps catch his ass. Sloppy in that he didn’t kill her and also that Route 3’s a pretty busy road at any time of day. If he’s going to take a shot in broad daylight on a busy road, he’s increasing his chances of getting caught. Good. I hope they find the son of a bitch and beat the crap out of him.

And they found the body of nine year old Jennifer Short. She was from southwest-Virginia and disappeared when her parents were killed. They’re questioning a couple folks about it. What a tragic case. Again, I hope they catch this guy and beat the crap out of him. And then beat him some more. Fucking child killer.

I’m sorry, I’m against the death penalty, but these are the kind of things that make me rethink my stance. Anyone who kills a child is sick and deserves to be beaten to the edge of death, if not beyond. And for someone to snipe people, hunt them, shoot them from a distance like it’s some sort of game, Christ, that guy’s out of his mind. And a coward. Shit, if you’re nuts and feel like killing some one, grow some balls and try it hand to hand so the other person can kick in those new found nuts and then beat the shit out of you.

Arugh. People piss me off sometimes.

Speak Loudly and Watch For That Big Stick

So I get off my bus to find a ton of cops standing in formation in McPhereson Square and a protest going on at Vermont/15th and K Streets…

So I get off my bus to find a ton of cops standing in formation in McPhereson Square and a protest going on at Vermont/15th and K Streets (I think it was the “Put The Squeeze On Capitalist Greed March” that started in Franklin Square at 14th and I streets around 7:30am). I went into the CVS and bought a couple of disposable cameras. By the time I got back outside, the police had moved in (a broken window at the CitiBank where the protesters stood was probably the reason).

I started taking pictures as the police broke up the protest. Someone set off a smoke bomb or a stink bomb of some sor (I eventually heard it was tear gas). The group of journalists and onlookers that crowded the police started to back away. Someone said something about pepper spray. Either way, the police quickly worked to break up whatever protest was going on.

People were backed up across the street into McPhereson Square while the police cleared out the protesters. They were put in plastic cuffs and then led onto two Metro busses and then taken somewhere.

A crowd stuck around to watch, protesters mixed in with journalists and bystanders. Now, here’s something I don’t get. The protesters off to the side, still protesting, holding their signs, hiding their faces, playing “Fight The Power” on their tape deck, if you’re so adamant about your cause and what you’re trying to push here, why aren’t you with those other guys getting arrested? Where were you when the cops came in? Running? Hiding? Or did you just arrive? I got more respect for the folks who are willing to stand their ground and get arrested than for the people who run away or come in afterwards to continue their protest. If you’re not willing to go down for what you believe in, how much do you believe in it?
